Understanding Fraud & Scams

What is fraud?
Fraud is when someone carries out a transaction you didn’t make or authorise — often to steal your money.

What is a scam?
Scams often involve tricking you into sending money to a criminal, known as Authorised Push Payment (APP) fraud. Scammers may impersonate friends, family, retailers, or trusted organisations — using emails, phone calls, or texts that appear genuine.

Common Types of Scams

  • Impersonation scams – Fraudsters pose as your bank, Nexus, or even the police, telling you to move money to a "safe" account.
  • Investment scams – Fake investment opportunities promising unrealistic returns.
  • Romance scams – Scammers build fake relationships online to manipulate you into sending money.
  • Online marketplace scams – You pay for goods that either never arrive or aren’t what was promised.
  • Fake job offers – Scammers offer roles with upfront costs for "training" or "checks" before disappearing.
  • Crypto scams – They use the buzz around cryptocurrency to sell fake "get rich quick" schemes.

How to Stay Safe

  • Be cautious of unsolicited contact — especially if it's pressuring or urgent.
  • Always verify identities using independent sources.
  • Never send money unless you’re absolutely sure of who you're sending it to.
  • Never share personal or security information — Nexus will never ask for your login details or full PIN.
  • Double-check investment offers and research them thoroughly.
  • Use the FCA Register to verify if a firm or person is authorised.
  • Watch out for shoulder surfers when using ATMs or entering passwords.
  • Review your accounts regularly and flag anything suspicious to us.
  • Always log out of your account properly — don’t just close the tab or app.
  • Only use secure websites — look for https:// and a closed padlock symbol.

What to Look Out For

  • Does it sound too good to be true? It probably is.
  • Be wary of emails or messages that are: Poorly written or contain spelling errors
  • Pressuring you to act quickly
  • Asking you to click unknown links or open attachments
  • Offering unusually high returns
